Whitefish Mountain Resort offers more than 3,000 acres of skiable terrain buried in more than 300 inches of snow. The Resort offers rentals, lessons, night skiing, and competitions. Also offered are a full-service daycare and a boardwalk full of outfitters and shops. Ask about their “Ambassador Program”. Located just 20 minutes away, the free community S.N.O.W. Bus operates daily.
Blacktail Mountain
Everyone starts at the top at Blacktail Mountain! One drive to the 6,780 ft. summit, regardless of whether you’re an expert or novice, you’ll see what we mean! On this “upside-down hill” you have a top to bottom run in before riding a chair! Located in Lakeside 45 minutes from Whitefish. The mountain offers over 1000 acres of National Forest land, 1 Triple Chair, 2 Double Chairs, and a Handtow.
Back Country Skiing
Let Great Northern Powder Guides take you on a skiing adventure! Take a full-day, guided back country adventure to access your private, personal powder lines in wide open bowls, gladed chutes, and some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. Guests have the opportunity to ski 10,000-14,000 vertical feet per day. Guided adventures are all day and include breakfast and lunch.
Snowmobiling
Experience the breathtaking beauty of Glacier country’s winter wonderland on over 200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails! Experienced, knowledgeable guides will take you by frozen waterfalls, through snow covered forests, and beyond to view the best vistas that Northwest Montana has to offer!
Fat Tire Biking
If you have not tried this yet, it is a must! Fat bikes have super wide tires to navigate across snow and ice for winter travel. Bikes can be taken on the paths around town, some local groomed cross-country ski trails, and on the fat bike specific groomed trails at Whitefish Bike Retreat.
Dog Sledding
Join us for one of life’s great adventures; cruising the back-country of northwest Montana pulled by sled dogs! Tuck yourself into a soft, warm sled and travel at the speed of dog through the snow-covered wilderness. Dog Sled Adventures operates out of the vast, scenic Stillwater State Forest, on the western flank of Glacier National Park, just north of Whitefish. Want a chance to mush your own team of dogs? Experience Bigfork Base Camp for a more hands on approach!
Ice Fishing
Weather permitting, ice fishing is available daily on one of the area’s beautiful mountain lakes! Fish with experienced guides in the comfort of spacious, heated, fishing shanties. All experience levels welcome!
Cross Country Skiing
Get out into Montana’s scenic beauty with a cross-country ski! The Glacier Nordic Center in Whitefish offers trails groomed for classic and skate skiing, ski rentals, and lessons. A variety of course loops are available for all ability levels. The more adventurous can explore the wintery landscape of Glacier Park on skis as experts guide you through the vast, pristine wilderness in a way few are able to experience it.
Snowshoeing
Enjoy a Montana adventure on Snowshoes! This activity is family-friendly and fun. With trails around Whitefish, Glacier National Park and beyond, unguided or with a tour, snowshoeing offers another great opportunity to explore the majestic winter scenery.
Horse Drawn Sleigh or Wagon Rides
Enjoy the magic of a sleigh, drawn by gentle draft horses, while snuggling up with blankets and loved ones. Let Cripple Creek Horse Ranch take you back to a simpler time…a time to relax and let the beauty that surrounds you soothe your soul. Full campfire dinners in a heated canvas cabin are also available. When the snow level is low, wagons may be used instead of sleighs.

Venture into the wintry wilderness of Montana led by experienced guides. Enjoy the fresh air, catch an occasional glimpse of wildlife and see places most people only imagine.
Glacier Adventure Guides will lead you via skis or snowshoes over the snow-covered landscape to areas abounding with frozen waterfalls, snowy peaks and ice-capped streams. Try ice climbing on local ice features. Guides have more than 15 years of climbing experience.
Winter in Glacier National Park
Experience Apgar Village and Lake McDonald Valley in the winter! Discover flora & fauna while enjoying the solitude of the winter during this unique season. Two-hour, ranger-led snowshoe hikes are available through the Lake McDonald Valley. Snowshoes are available for rent at Apgar Visitor Center. Dress for winter conditions and bring water and snacks! Not recommended for children under 6.
